While we have known for centuries about the health benefits of all types of honey, recent studies have shown that only Manuka has an antibacterial component that sets it apart from other honeys.
Manuka honey mostly comes from the Leptospermum species of plant, which impart the honey with very high levels of a naturally occurring compound known as Methylglyoxal (or MGO for short).
MGO has been scientifically shown to be the major contributor to manuka honey’s powerful antimicrobial activity and is attributed to many health benefits.

Many people think manuka honey only comes from New Zealand.

The manuka marketing people from New Zealand have done a great job of persuading the public that the only true source of manuka is New Zealand.

Clever marketing, but it’s not true.
Manuka honey is produced in New Zealand and Australia.

Indeed due to the warmer climate in Australia, our bees tend to produce honey that is far superior in MGO levels.
Scientists believe this is governed by latitudenal differences – the heat and humidity of the Australian environment.

Take 1-2 teaspoons of honey (10g) up to 4 times daily, to take advantage of its many health and wellbeing benefits.

Alternatively you can use manuka as a general sweetener, on your breakfast, in your cooking and of course on bread/toast.

Even though honey has been used for the treatment of ailments since ancient times, it is only in relatively recent years that scientific studies and
analysis of the benefits of manuka honey have been undertaken.
Manuka is now gaining increasing acceptance in modern medicine and as an alternative strategy owing to its antibacterial and antimicrobial activity and properties.

In recent tests conducted at Sydney University’s School of Molecular and Microbial Biosciences, a very high grade manuka honey killed all the bacteria it was being tested on, including antibiotic resistant ‘Superbugs’.
This has been attributed to the MGO.
The higher the MGO rating you see on a Manuka honey, the higher the level of antibacterial activity.
